A lot of people think Goodfellas is the better movie, but I prefer Casino because of the deeper dynamic between Sam Rothstein and Nicky Santoro and how their friendship crumbles as both deal with their problems in different ways, and how they rise and fall. No. Goodfellas and Casino are separate stories. Both movies share some of the same actors. Significantly, both movies have source material from two different books by author Nicholas Pileggi. Pileggi and filmmaker Martin Scorsese co-wrote the screenplays for both movies. Wise Guy: Life in a Mafia Family, (Simon and Schuster, 1985), the book which became Goodfellas, is about Henry Hill and his life in organized crime. With Goodfellas that was everything mob. Goodfellas is better but Casino is right behind it. Great movie. My friend told me The Departed was better than both but he just saw Casino so I think he's changed his mind. Departed is a good movie.
